In simpler terms, a community is a group of people belonging to a geographical area who share some common interests for making a living. Communities are compact groups whose customs are interdependent. A community is a big social system; in itself that is why its growth plays a significant role in the development of the country. Community development defined as the efforts done for the welfare of the community, efforts done for bringing functional change in the lives of the people of the community.

WHY?

The background of community development in India laid down much before the independence when during the freedom struggle Mahatma Gandhi motivated the people and emphasized on developing the rural areas and villages of India. He proposed the ideology that a nation can grow when it’s backward, and marginalized regions begin to build. After the independence, community development was popularised as a high priority work in India. The initial community development programs included boosting life and living standards of the rural poor extending to agriculture, education, health, housing, water, electricity, and animal husbandry, cultural and social activities. Development is always necessary for a country to grow if there is no development all the efforts are futile. Community development is an accumulative exercise conducted in the interests of the people of a community. In India, many communities are belonging to the backward, rural, illiterate unprivileged, weak, and disadvantaged people whose living standards are inferior. Backward and underprivileged communities share common issues like poverty, lack of education, low-standard health, marginal housings, deficiency of facilities and amenities. These communities continuously need help and support to fulfill the necessities of life and livelihood. Thus, to promote better living conditions, motivate community participation, and stimulate welfare, a genuine need to work for the unprivileged communities should be one of the prime focuses of the country.
